Introduction
Prádena del Rincón is a small mountainside village, set against the matchless natural backdrop of the Sierra Norte range to the north of Madrid.
History
The town's origins apparently hark back to cattle herding (seasonal migrations to the upland pastures) in the times when the Moors were ousted from Spain (a period in the 11 th century Known as "La Reconquista"). Its name, "Prádena", is taken from the large expanses of meadowland in the area ("pradera", meadow).
Traditions
Prádena is rich in tradition and custom. Some typical examples of its cultural heritage are:
The folk groups that dance the time-honoured "jota" and "rondalla" to expert accompaniment on guitar and lute-like "bandurria"; the "hornazo", a festive day when all the villagers gather; carnival, marked by the running of a heifer and colourfully clad buffoons ("botargas"), sporting bells at the waist and wielding a club; the July fiesta held in honour of the town's Patron Saint, Our Lady of Carmen; the traditional winter butchering of a pig.
Traditional Architecture
Outstanding examples of local architecture include the stunning Romanesque-Mudejar style parish church of Santo Domingo de Silos (St. Dominic's) built on a Romanesque ground plan, probably in the early years of the area's repopulation. Thanks to ongoing conservation efforts, traditional buildings in the town centre are in an excellently preserved state. Other typical sights include the wood-fired oven, shoeing frame, old mill, troughs, cattle sheds, etc.
Wild Life
A fascinating natural environment. Ranging from the spectacular oak forest of Pyrenean or Black Oak to the delicate holly tree. From the soaring majesty of the golden eagle to the fox's bright inquisitive stare.
